Why Not Collect Australia?

Australia can be collected in many ways and the most popular era I have found is used stamps from 1990 to now.

The next group is 1966 to 1989.(Decimal) Generally a cheaper era.

From 1940 to 1965. (Pre-Dec) Also generally a cheaper era.

From 1913 to 1939. Some very specialised issues in this era!

From 1850 to 1912. Colonies or State stamps. Again a very specialised area.

Something to think about. KGV

Of coarse I am not bias!

But Australia has the most beautiful stamps in the world.

I have an Australia album printed on Steiner pages. I like all of the pre-decimal issues and someday would like to form a more complete collection of them. I collect the newer issues as well, but as with most countries there's so many of them to keep up with.

Just a tip regarding photobucket, Flickr etc. If you put double quotes around the url eg. "http.......html", It hides the code and keeps your post formatted nicely

I'm not a fan of most modern stamps including Australia but do have a few Roos and KGVs.

Great KGV multiples and I suspect you have a lot more of this issue. I have been stockpiling a bunch of Australian stamps for a while and, some day, am going to have a good look at what I have and see if I want to expand on this very complex country. Many years ago, someone gave me a page-full of 'roos, but I suspect they are the most common ones (haven't looked). If I were to have a go at this country, I would probably have more interest in the older issues (pre-1940). Keep posting pictures and thanks.

Great to hear you have a stock base growing to help you one day to do a collection on Australia.

You never no when it comes to the roo's and other pre 1940's Australia stamps. They are not easy at 1st the decipher so a page of roo's could very well have something hidden in it all. The most important thing is always about the condition of the stamps firstly unless it is a major find of coarse.

Australia, pre decimal, stamps are my main collecting area.
I do have a close to complete decimal collection to 1990.
I need 7 singles to complete the pre decimal, those are all Kangaroos. I doubt I will ever be able to afford them.

I also have a very nice collection of Australia Antarctic Territory and the beginnings of a nice collection of Australia Frama Labels.

Close by is Papua New Guinea, another very good collecting area.

My big problem is I use Seven Seas Hingeless Albums and I can't get them in the United States. Postage from Australia is a killer. I do think they are the best I have ever used and I've used many over the years.

Aust pre-decimal for me also,I'm waiting for a Lotto win to finish the roos off.

Top of my list would have to be KGVs.

I also have decimals to 2000 nearly complete all first day cancels from damaged first day covers.

I have thousands of Aussie stamps, and I am only starting to now starting to assemble them into albums and write descriptions of them. As you say it is amazing what can and might turn up.
The Australian States, I am leaving them in the glassines that I have sorted them into. When I can afford the various volumes on cancellations, then I will take a serious look at them. The number of varieties on the states is astounding, and some that are supposed to have watermarks do not, especially those from Western Australia.

I want to specialize in Pre- Decimals, Roos and KGV, they are the most interesting. The others. Decimal onwards, I am assembling into stock books, so that each of my three children will have a collection, which they can decide what they want to do with it. My seven year old daughter seems to be the most interested. The second eldest seems to want to know how much he would make from them, and the eldest, well, he is a fifteen year old, and has not got time for stamps, life is too busy and hectic.

Reminds me of the time I mailed a letter to AUSTRIA
and it ended up in AUSTRALIA.

Since then I always write it in bold and underline.

Or how about the time I sent a letter to my mother in law
in Sydney, Nova Scotia and it ended up in Aussie Sydney
where no such address was found and was redirected.
