In the Scott Catalogue for Spain at the start of the listing there is a note: "Stamps punched with a small round hole have done telegraph service. In this condition most of them sell for $0.15 to $10.".

Hope that helps.

Some proofs had holes in them so they could not be used for postage s'far as I recall.

So are you saying that if I took a mint stamp, put a hole in it and tried to mail a letter it would come back postage due?

The postage due comment made me think, would any standard rate 49 cent envelope come back as postage due these days? USPS would have to sort the letters by zip code to get them off in the right direction, but would anyone look at the stamp? Especially once that barcode is on, it must be mostly automated.

I'll mail something with the hole in it and see what happens. I'm thinking there must be red flag of sorts or used stamps would go through and to my knowledge they don't.

a hole punch would be considered 'minor' damage and the piece should go through the system without issue. these machines run at a rate of 32,000 pieces per hour and are not set up for such exacting examination of condition. Only the delivering carrier will notice a short paid, re-used, or other significant damage and mark-up the piece accordingly for return or collection of any postage due.
