I believe that most early collectors were less concerned with 'ultimate/superb quality' than they were with just obtaining fairly nice copies of what were missing from their collections. 'Superb', 'jumbo', 'MNH', 'PO Fresh', 'Vivid colors', and etc. are relatively new factors for collecting stamps. I don't believe early stamp collectors gave much thought whatsoever to writing on the back of stamps. In their mind it may have been 'you can't see the writing so no problemo!'. As for the dealers who write on stamps nowadays, SHAME ON THEM!
