Folks that collect stuff - whatever that may be - tend to have an instant bond with other collectors - regardless of the things being collected.

I agree.

The last time I booked a vacation, I had co-workers ask me if I had any special plans. You can imagine the weird looks I got from people when I said I was driving 10 hours to go to a stamp show (and auction). One of the strangest responses was simply "why", from someone who had just returned from a comic book convention, although that was at least in town. And then there are the strange queries from the border officers as I cross from Canada to the US and tell them why I'm travelling.

I only tell people that I meet off island and have no trouble.

On island I tell nobody but our local PO & some very close friends. Our collection is massive & takes up the dinning room mostly stomach to shoulder high with walk ways, large work bench on plastic tubs and a computer desk in there somewhere. There are too many people here that would kick the door in to feed their habit. Sad Hey!

For security there are 3 baseball bat looking things, one near the front door, one in my bedroom & one where I work. The front door has been kicked in 3 times. The last time was a some of years ago now and none of them have got passed the front door area.

This old cartoon kind of fits this thread -- so I'm posting it to inject a sense of humor into the discussion:

As for me personally, if discussion comes up as to me being a stamp collector, the typical response is what's your most valuable stamp and why don't you sell it. Non-collectors just don't understand.

I'm always interested to see the reaction I get when I tell people these things, but it also reminds me to consider my own reactions to other people's interests.

Excellent point, Stray Feathers!

I have no problem bringing it up. Some scream nerd alert (offers of tape for my glasses) but it's surprising how many get excited, used to collect stamps or have a 'treasure trove' to show you.
My oldest daughter recently told me her friends at university think I'm 'weird' because I collect stamps and practice tai chi.
What better compliment???

I sorted and hunted for papweback books in between stamp collecting forays. The collector and accumulater (when the going gets tough) in me keeps needing that new stamp or variety search around the corner.

People are so funny not to want that but a surprising lot of people do, foing by my lack of success in hunting sometimes.

Stamps and tai chi? Me too. I guess that's the "Yin" and "Yang" in all of us. The equal balance.
