Modern Postage-paid postcard. Sold at the Barcelona gpo, for 1 €. It pays the domestic postage rate (0.50€) and shows a contemporary eastern view of the Sagrada Familia Basilica. Circulated a week ago in Barcelona, and cancelled with the turistic pm of our city. There are also postcards (showing other landmarks), for Europe and Overseas, available.

I haven't added much to the mix lately, so today, here are a few more classic U.S. postal cards.

In today's mail I got this ebay purchase, one of the postal cards with Esperanto inscriptions that were issued by Liechtenstein in the 1930s:

3. Crefeld:

4. Hammonia (Ellbrief):

5. Frankfurt:

6. Frankfurt additional items:

7. Gera:

8. Hammonia:

9. Hansa:

10. Koln:

11. Mercur:

12. Munchen:

How was that? I hope you all found something of interest. Enjoy.

PoStat4evR,

I can post catalog IDs and/or excerpts for all of those, but I'll need some additional info. Can you post scans of the reverse sides, and if possible the dimensions in millimeters of each?

PoStat4evR,

Here's my best stab at it. All references are to Horst Müller's 4-volume Ganzsachenkatalog der deutschen Privatpost 1873 bis 1914. Scans open to larger versions.

1. Berlin Packetfahrt, PP129

2. Berlin Packetfahrt, probably PP82, PP83, or PP84

3. Berliner Privatpost & Spedition A.G. -- there are a handful of possibilities. To nail it down, I'd need the measurements and a shot of the reverse.

4. Brandenburg, P1

5. Brandenburg, PB1 minus Coupon 1

6. Krefeld, Express-Compagnie, probably P2

7. Krefeld, H.V. Express-Compagnie, P1

8. Krefeld, Express-Brief-Beförderung, P4 II

9. Chemnitz, Briefbeförderung Hammonia, P13

10. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Circular-Beförderung, P7, probably P7 b

11. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Brief-Verkehr, PF1 a

12. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Circular-Beförderung, P1 a

13. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Circular-Beförderung, P7, probably P7 f (see #10 above)

14. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Brief-Verkehr, PP2 (subvarieties exist depending on text on reverse)

15. Frankfurt am Main, Privat-Circular-Beförderung, either P3 a or P3 b

16. Gera, Packetkarte "Courier", PB1

17. Chemnitz, Briefbeförderung Hammonia, P17

18. Hamburg, Hammonia, either P4 a or P4 b

19. Hannover, Privat-Stadtbrief-Expedition Mercur, one of the P7 varieties (additional varieties exist if text on the reverse)

20. Breslau, Hansa, one of the P4 varieties (additional varieties exist if text on the reverse)

21. Danzig, Hansa, P1, probably P1 VII

22. Stettin, Hansa, K2 I

23. Köln, Privat-Brief-Verkehr, P5.22

24. Heidelberg, Privatbriefbeförderung Mercur, P3

25. München, Privat-Stadtpost Courier, K3

PostmasterGS: Thank you for the information on my items. Would be nice to have that set of catalogs, will have to look around and see what I can find on them. I will post the info you needed a little later today after I get back from my running around. Thanks again.

As it turns out, the additional info I need is only on #2, 3, 14, 19, & 20.

The Müller catalogs are in four volumes. Current editions are:

Vol 1: Aachen to Dresden, 1st Edition, 2009
Vol 2: Düren to Lübeck, 2nd Edition, 2011
Vol 3: Magdeburg to Zwickau, 2nd Edition, 2007
Vol 4: Packetfahrt Berlin, 1st Edition, 2013

You can find them at Philabooks (Vols 1, 2, 3, 4) or direct from the ArGe Privatpost (look under "Publikationen", "Sonderschriften").

OK. The lack of text on the reverse of most rules out a lot of the minor varieties.

#2 is PP82.

#3 is P8.

#14 is P2.

#19 is one of the four main P7 varieties, depending on shade of brown.

#20 is one of the six main P4 varieties, again depending on shade.

Armenia
15 December 2016

Postal card in honor of the 150th anniversary of the birth of French linguist Antoine Meillet (1866-1936). Meillet was a noted scholar in the field of historical and comparative Indo-European linguistics, and Armenian was one of his specialties. I've read his Altarmenisches Elementarbuch and Esquisse d'une grammaire comparée de l'arménien classique, as well as the English translations of General Characteristics of the Germanic Languages and The Indo-European Dialects.
