Hairlines tend to occur on stamps that have been printed on a rotary press where the printing plate has been bent after hardening. Hairlines follow the axis of printing cylinder rotation. Horizontal hairlines indicate a horizontal rotation axis. Thus, the printing plate was bent in a vertical direction in order to fit around a printing cylinder with a horizontal rotation axis. Generally, the direction in which a printing plate is bent can slightly add to the size of a stamp.
