Yes... the correct date of posting was 6 May. I had calculated from the date posted by PoStat4evR and didn't scroll up to check the postmark date on the actual cover.
So... it was 6th May 1896

Thanks for confirming.

So to summarize (using the Gregorian calendar) the date of posting in Russia was May 6, 1896 and it arrived in New York on May 21, 1896 ... a total delivery time of 15 days.

Different countries adopted the Gregorian calendar at differing times. Dating old letters etc can be a mine-field due to other reasons... for example, a letter from Scotland posted and dated January 1st 1750 would arrive in England two days later on January 3rd 1749
This was due to Scotland's new year beginning on January 1st while England's new year started on 25th March.
