The Exploits river is in the central area of Grand Falls/Windsor so I would guess
Exploits is near there.

I'm laughing Wert, because I'm here now. Yes, my goal is to acquire all Newfoundland covers in existence.
Working on plan to fund it but kidnapping Bill Gates seems untenable.

I have about 350 covers right now. And my current obsession is to acquire one of every Scott # on a cover--sort of postal history and art collection to demonstrate the country. I used to just buy anything that I liked, and then as I put them together, I realized it would make more sense to build a collection like with the stamps...in order by #. I'm obviously not doing much below #25. But the rest is feasible--and I'm currently missing about 60. I might post all the ones that I have someday, but it would have to be a link to another site, because of the size of the files.

I also am trying to get every FFC too, and just landed 2 old ones. stay tuned to post those images.

anyone have any covers to trade or sell?

1 - Why would you concentrate on one area of stamps...??
2 - Why Canada and not the States...??
3 - Why Newfoundland...??

I live in States, but also am New Zealand resident; traveled and lived all over world (born outside US and lived in Europe), so I am thoroughly a Yank but keen itch for the world....which is part of answer, but also:

When my uncle introduced me to collecting, he was a hoarder of all countries but guided me to pick one country and focus only on that and go deep. I chose Newfoundland in 1969 because it was a dead country, as we know--no new stamps being issued. So it appealed to me because it seemed feasible to collect 100% of the stamps in my lifetime. my dream and goal was to simply build the best and largest collection of Newfoundland stamps and covers in the world.

Thus over the years, I've channeled my obsession, I mean investment, er "hobby" into just Newfoundland and nothing else. It is weird and unusual. But I find it liberating because I just avoid being tempted with Canada or US or other areas. The closest that I come are a few covers mailed in Canada with a Newfoundland stamp--but even those sort of annoy me when I see them, because they sort of impact the harmony of being just Newfoundland. When I go to trade shows, I just walk around and ask about Newfoundland--and most of you broad investors look at me like lost loner, but the purity of it is nice because when I do find something at a table, I typically know way more than they do on the value, attributes etc.

Lastly, from a cost perspective it helps a lot because I don't have to buy books or catalogs or anything else like $1 US or Canadian stamps. From time to time, I admire the beauty of other stamps but I simply stick to my knitting.

Hope this is not too much information. I am happy to post any images or covers of any Newfoundland item or assist anyone with my humble and ignorant viewpoints.

By the way, I think Exploits were some islands off the coast of Newfoundland but also might be part of Burnt Islands?

Tommy..You are a treat to listen to...Thanks for the honest words about your obsession...I applaud you for your tenacity with NFLD stamps and the collection of them...With your desire to collect everything out there, I believe it will be YOU that every one some day will come to..Once you has fulfilled your dreams, a web site with information would be fantastic...

This should provide some answer to the question of "Where's Exploits?". The attachment below is the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Avery Winsor (the addressee on the cover scanned above) who was noted to be a merchant in Exploits, in the District of Twillingate, Newfoundland. Other research shows that he was a merchant at Exploits, Burnt Island, Newfoundland:

Here's another interesting tidbit: In 1907, Thomas A. Winsor was actually the Postmaster of "Exploits Harbor":

Thank you to all who posted information on my interest in "Exploits" where the cover above was addressed. (Especially cool WT1 was the connection of the addressee to the location!)

I think I understand, but being not from up there, I am a tiny bit confused:

Exploits (or Exploits Harbor) appears on google maps to be between two little islands north of Lewisporte on the NE side of Newfoundland. And across the harbor/harbour from "Burnt Cove". Are these two islands the Burnt Islands?

But "Burnt Islands" appears on Google Maps on the south side of the Newfoundland island near Channel-Port aux Basques, near passage to Nova Scotia. Are these the Burnt Islands?

Sorry to be so dumb, but I'm just trying to put in my history record that this cover mailed by Ayre in St Johns went around North to Exploits (I think so) or south to Burnt Islands and then to Exploits?

As you know, I am a Newfoundland collector as well although not exclusively so. I have, however, become fascinated by the 1919 Trail of the Caribou issue and am collecting covers, multiples, mint and used singles of the complete issue. The low values are easy but the values above 5 cents are less common. Do you have any suggestions as to places where some of these higher values on cover for example could be found? I have mint blocks of the 1 cent, 2, 3, 5, 10 and 24 cent denominations and am looking for the rest. No covers above the 5 cent value so far.

I like this issue too, and have a few ideas but I am not sure that I follow you completely:

1. Are you seeking use of these stamps on covers? (If so, there are difficult to find at all and even harder for "proper use") My recommendation is to look to auction houses like Vance or Eastern, but the pickings are slim. ebay has practically none. My hypothesis is that use on Covers was limited and most are in private hands
2. Or in mint blocks? I have no suggestions
3. Or individual (mint or used)? I've got a ton and would be happy to trade/barter/sell whatever you need

As an aside, I recently acquired and posted a cover of one of these stamps used in the 1960s!

tommy..When I was at my stamp store yesterday buying a Nova Scotia stamp (sorry about that...haha), I saw a book on specialised Newfie stamps..it was about 350 pages and cost $79.95...yikes

Was it Walsh and Butts "Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue"?

Worth every penny in my opinion (several other posts on why) and I sleep with it under my pillow
