Hi, here is something from my collection: Red 10c doesn't exist. There are only two green colors (#PR2, #PR6)for 10c. I assume red 10c as a forgery. |

There are LOTS of forgeries of the first newspaper issue, many in the original colors. The key is that little label at the bottom where it says "NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY, NEW YORK". The lettering of that label must be very clear and sharp, in the fakes it never is. Also the genuine stamps were embossed, and the fakes are not. |

Actually......the items shown in the fist post are called "transposed vignettes" by specialists and when genuinely USED, they are desirable, especially ON cover. Off cover, the cancel must cover both the vignette and the frame to be considered genuinely used because obviously, anyone can paste a vignette from one stamp onto the frame of another stamp to create one of these - which is why unused are valueless. They were originally created "for fun" and/or artistic reasons by the sender. On cover, they must be used "in period" to be considered collectible. But they are NOT "junk". |

Bill I was hoping you'd post the name. You told me about transposed vignettes a couple years ago but I forgot the term. I like these a lot and have sold some of these covers on ebay for $50-100 each. Ken |

I attend and bid at two or three stamp auctions each year . I purchase various specialized lots for my collection . Then I try to purchase a "junk lot" or "bulk lot" at the end of the auction ,something to play with while watch the news or sports on t v . It was in one of those bulk lots from years past . |

Here are some more "fakes" you will not find in any reference book .They are actually cut outs from modern stamps . Yes they are high quality and could fool many people. |

Ah yes, I bought these two pieces on ebay a while back, on the off chance they were proofs or essays, only to find out later they were from a similar sheet. Luckily didn't pay a lot for them, but it sure raised some interesting speculation here on the forum for a little bit. |
