Hello valjean, welcome to Stamp Community.

Is the ink aniline? That is, does it run in water?

Usually soaking or floating face up in tepid water, possibly with a bit of salt, will remove the gum.

There is a product called Stamp Lift that some use, but I have not used it myself yet, so cannot in truth say much about it.

Hi valjean,

I have used Stamplift successfully. Follow the instructions and it works well. Do not soak the stamp in the liquid. Apply carefully where needed only on the back of the stamp using an artist' brush. Do not apply so much that it soaks through to the face of the stamp. Wait a few seconds and gently, and carefully, tease off the paper using stamp tongs. Dab off any surplus fluid with a clean cloth and leave stamp face up on blotting paper to dry. When fully dry press between clean plain paper or blotting paper inserted between the pages of a book. Practice on something cheap first.

Terry

There seems to be some staining on the front of the stamp that matches the stuff on the back. Maybe someone had used something like masking tape to adhere it to an album.

Hi valjean,

Yes the gum will be affected, it will soften. This is why you must only apply the Stamplift to the area of paper you want to remove. The gum is already affected there anyway. Should you get some fluid on the unaffected area of gum do not touch it. If it is only a tiny amount leave it to dry off. If it is more you can carefully absorb the excess with the corner, or edge, of a piece of blotting paper, but do not drag it across the softened gum. Then leave the gum undisturbed to harden off . Proceed as above till done.

Fortune favours the brave,
Terry

I think you should just soak it in warm or even hot water and just wipe it off.
Or scrape in off as it is.

You would risk the green ink fading if it is of low permanence.

Considering the age of the stamp, I recommend leaving it as is; don't try to take off the paper.

I'm with Climber Steve on this. As unattractive as it may seem, what if you damage the stamp further? You have a beautiful little piece of history there. Store it in your album and appreciate it.

I concur. Leave as is. Too much downside and not enough upside to messing with it.

Thanks for suggestion guys...BUT...

I recieved lift fluid that I bought on ebay today.and tried to remove the back paper.and I made it,i removed this 100 years old paper.....i must thank Terry about this,,thanks a lot..

In the begining I tried to test with a US stamp on cover that I just received.but not doing very well, the back of stamp became fragile,i think that I must use too much fluid.i make a firm dicision.JUST DO IT.
i used brush, dip it just little bid of fluid.and slightly brush on the paper aream,Then shaved it slowly and slightly..I think I made it.here is the effect.

Hi valjean,

Nicely done. Things for future attempts; hold the tongs at a shallower angle closer to the paper. Use the side of the blade end and not the point. Less chance of digging into the stamp. If the paper does not scrape off easily, put a little more fluid on and wait a few seconds.

So....let's see the result front and back please.

Terry
