Great post Mad. You've got my curiosity peaked- what are you willing to share about your new system?

Steve, what about the Scott pages is limiting relative to how you collect Portuguese Colonies?

Many of you have posted about Steiner or home-brew pages you print. I assume that mainly ink jet printers are used but correct me if I'm wrong. What paper weights are being used? What's the heaviest paper you can use in an ink jet, and do you feed the paper manually or automatically?

My very unscientific, small data point hypothesis with this test is that maybe Vario pages aren't as bulky as I originally thought. I can fit a lot more stamps on a page than with the Steiners.

Though I use stock books, I can confirm this.

Where you get the biggest advantages is with small stamps (such as most classic stamps). Where Steiner fits 15-20 stamps on page, you can easily end up with three fold number on stock page / stock book (even when using insert labels/captions).

With bigger/modern issues the difference is about factor of a third IMHO.

It's not a big deal if you collect in limited scope (say 1840-1940), but when you do it all (1840 to date) there's a whooping difference in cost, space and usability.

To further suppoort the vario stockpage alternative.

Random example - Ivory Coast to 1944 (colonial era)

Steiner has 15 pages for all Scott listed items
Scott V 1 has 6 pages for a selection (info taken from http://bigblue1840-1940.blogspot.co...tStamps.html )

My setup, based off the specialized Maury catalog, requires 5 1/2 double sided vario pages (5 of the 6S and 1 5S) plus an additional 1/4 Vario 2S page for the 1 sheetlet issued for the 1937 Expo. This includes spaces I left for varieties listed as either minor numbers or not listed in Scott but included in Maury. So 12 page faces total, for more stamps than even what Steiner sets spaces for, and with no need for hinges or mounts (I use the black background pages). Total cost for pages maybe US$4 at most (purhased pages in bulk from Amazon dealer).

It's been some time and good inputs favoring the use of stockpages. I only wish I had started out with the Vario pages from the beginning myself... Now I am quite reluctant to shift the entire collection from my stock albums to varios, it's a massive undertaking and kind of frustrating to break up the established system.
I was asked weeks ago for a picture of how I am storing my WW collection, and here it is. My wife hate it ... but I am quite satisified

btw - the kids stuff in the lower right corner, easy going!

Blaamand, This is awesome, and I simply can't see why your wife disapproves... It looks great :-)

Shermae, in reply to your post at 12:27 there was a really good thread recently at https://goscf.com/t/43266 on paper weight, type, etc. One of many, but it's the most recent one.

Blaamand - that is so well organized, how can your wife possibly hate it? You need to show her some scans of rooms like this

Ha ha, difficult to beat that mess! Presume that shot is not done at a stamp collector's place, as most of us seems to like some more order. Thanks for the compliments anyway.

Jenny2U,
Treasure!

Stamps on envelopes, in books, old maps, stamps stuck in weird places! A bag of coins. A Viking helmet on top shelf. A hole for the stamp collector himself (or herself) in the lower white space.

Excellent.

Shermae, you - and all other fellow collectors - are welcome anytime Visitors sharing our interest are more rare than the Penny black, so you would be welcomed in best possible way Unfortunately time and distance is an obstacle, that's where this forum offers us an excellent substitute

Keijo, thanks buddy, I appreciate that I suppose our 'offices' are subject for a somewhat comparable level of 'madness'
