Just curious -Why doesn't a specialty club approach the stamp chat room here and ask for a separate section for their club discussions it could restricted to members only for postings .Maybe the stamp community can charge the club a fee or each access person pays a fee .

A separate time like Thursday 8 pm to 9 pm for club business and get a active one subject talk going on . This site is already set up and would be easy with the great possibility that the club would pick up new members .

I renewed BNAPS, but let my subscription to Canadian Stamp News go (sorry CSN!). Found the articles were more about modern stuff, and just wasn't doing it for me.

Floortrader,

I think they are afraid of losing control. One can wonder why a group that focuses on shows so members could meet is totally opposed to online ways for members to meet.

I've renewed my APS/APRL membership and will renew Linn's when the time comes. While I definitely enjoy the forums and information available online, apparently I am becoming old fashioned in that I still prefer my magazines in print format, that I can read in bed, on the plane, and, um, elsewhere

My stamp budget includes memberships, and there are still a couple of societies I should join.

Climber Steve - Marty Farber has most of his stock listed on Zillionsofstamps.com

I consider him a bit expensive but periodically buy from him. He has a knack for finding difficult WW items.

I know what you mean James. Back when I subscribed to CSN, it was a "hefty" tabloid. By the time I let my subscription expire, it was down to a very thin shadow of its former self.

I don't mean to beat up on CSN; I know it's incrediblly difficult to publish a newspaper these days. But many of the dedicated and interesting columnists retired (or passed) and were never replaced.

Finally, as you say, my interest in modern issues is low compared to the classic material.

Since there are no news stands near me, I haven't seen an issue CSN in several years. If it were to miraculously return to its glory days, I would gladly subscribe again.

Shermae: thanks for the tip. I've visited the Zillions site a time or two, but have yet to buy anything.

My membership/subscription renewals come due throughout the year. Right now, I'm in three libraries (APRL, Rocky Mountain, Western); four specialist societies: ISPP (Portuguese); MEPSI (Mexico); Polonus (Poland); BNAPS + Newfoundland study group. The annual renewal question mark always is Linn's, but I do keep it. I've been an APS life member for a few years now, so I just do donations a couple times per year.

I got Canadian Stamp News for several years. But dropped it in the early 1990s when I moved from Canada collecting and made Portugal & colonies my main specialty. Still have the Canada collection and spent some time last year re-doing the pages for the early years (through the 1908 Quebec set).

USSS is the best one for collectors interested in US stamps.Great monthly publication with a digital archive of 70 years available to members.

Over all I have been cutting down on the number of stamp organizations that I am a member of due to my stamp budget.

Morning all,

The main question I wrestle with when deciding what group memberships are of value to me and our hobby is, "what extra value does membership in a given group add to our collecting experience?" Access to the archive of philatelic articles? Access to folks sharing a similar interest? Access to collectable material? All three functions can now be handled in the digital environment. Granted face time is not assured digitally; but, you can have meaningful conversations with fellow collectors you might never chat with due to geographically separation.

The digital era is the biggest quantum change in communication ability since the printing press. Thankfully, folks are not physically going to war like they did six hundred years or so ago; but, some of the old guard groups still insist on operating back in times passed.

Information is still a valuable commodity. Modern technology makes it harder and harder to secure information to a limited audience enabling its current stewards to profit from it. My personal view is that "information shared is history saved."

Best regards, Russ Ryle
