Actually, I'd start by posting a $500 on ebay. High value items do pretty well there. Wider visibility and less cost to seller.

In the "managing your expectations" department: You need to factor in the reality that these are pasted to backing paper and as such they will be viewed as damaged, just like rare piece of currency in the same condition. If these can be separated from the backer *without* harming the certificate it will improve your ability to sell them. But that could require some professional assistance.

If these are in fact unreported, as mentioned earlier in the thread, the condition may have less of an impact than you think.

As it is, according to the following exhibit, the 1918 series are VERY scarce:

EDIT: Oops, I see the exhibit was posted earlier in this thread. I'll leave the link up though, as some may find the PDF version more useful.

There's a 2017 Congress Book article (I wrote it) that lays out and describes the material but no priced catalog.

Thanks. Ironically, I just packed the PF copy of that book last week in preparation for their moving. Apparently prices are variable because of this. How often have you seen any that were issued in places such as the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico?

I've never seen a Virgin Islands certificate. Most of the reported high value 1954 series certificates come from PR (from a hoard of cancelled certificates that turned up in NY; NYC also handled redemptions for Puerto Rico), but there are very few from the earlier series from PR. There are a couple of Hawaii reported and a couple of Alaska.

In a few weeks I will be breaking down and cataloging a large accumulation which includes a group of about 40 of these certificates (including two from VI and one from PR, these three from 1954 but there are other series). I don't own any of it; eventually the group will be an auction lot somewhere which is why I am looking for info. I will certainly read the article in the Congress Book.

The last 1918 $500 postal certificate sold on ebay for $135.
Guess it's found money!
Just posted another 1918 $500 bond on ebay .
I find it to be such an interesting subject about how few 1918 exist and until
I sold one on ebay one with State of issue has not been seen on bottom right side of bond.
