Wanted to bump this thread because this morning I found an old piece of correspondence from the USPS in my stamp cave. Many years ago, I received a note and a moldy, 1-2 year old piece of mail in an official, brown envelope. There was no way of knowing whether the truck burned on its own (as shown in this thread) or was involved in a traffic accident.

Note reads, "This mail was found in a wrecked postal vehicle recently. Please excuse any inconvenience."

I gave a Highway Post Office presentation at my local stamp club last month that explored the technological transportation evolution and the Highway Post Office postal history. After showing how the PO used personnel to sort and process mail inside motor vehicles as it traveled down the roads; I wrapped up the presentation with this video.

What is unique about this truck motoring down the interstate? It has no driver. This self-driving truck, produced by the San Diego-based TuSimple company, covered the 1000 mile trips between Dallas and Phoenix carrying mail for the USPS in a May 2019 pilot program. The USPS estimates that these self-driving trucks would save them over $10 million per year.
