I'd be curious too. That would be wonderful to aid in watermark detecting of stamps and priced reasonably if it does. I'll be watching for any responses. Great question Jogil |

I contacted the mfg. and the rep did check with the technical dept. They indicated it would detect watermarks in stamps and my next question was if it did not, could I return it? and I was told yes. I also went onto Best Buy's website and where the MFG offer's it @ 49.98, Best Buy has it @ 34.99 and I will order one today and update my findings when I get it. |

Do you think that philately is becoming more like forensic science, especially when examining "philatelic crimes" like fakes and forgeries? |

The so-called "watermark detector" portion of this device is likely just a strong backlight. That's likely to work well with currency watermarks, which are large and vibrant. However, stamp watermarks are much smaller and less distinct, especially depending on the type of paper. Also, if you look at the reviews of this unit on Amazon, there are a lot of complaints about the bulbs burning out in very short periods of time. Caveat emptor. http://www.amazon.com/Royal-Soverei...pageNumber=1 |

Dan, Once again...thanks for your enlightening me to the negative reviews and pointing out the likely disappointing results I would have achieved trying to detect watermarks which are much smaller. I held off earlier from making the purchase via mail and was going to pick one up at Best Buy locally...but I think I'll hold off till something proven comes along. Back to fluids once again...the hope of making my life easier is gone after the negative reviews which I hadn't seen.

Don, I went and tried one. For me the biggest drawback is the lack of shortwave UV. The watermark on a dollar bill is easily seen, but I could not find a watermark on any stamps that I knew had one with the fluid method. I took some Dutch stamps with me that had the "circles" watermark that is easily seen with the naked eye and even those were hard to see with the detector. I guess it is meant for money!

Thanks for the confirmation Peter. I had high hopes...quickly faded by the responses and reviews. Happily, I saved the cost and subsequent return of the "Counterfeit Bill Detector" and hopefully, in my lifetime, a WM detector which doesn't cost an arm and a leg will hit the market. Old eyes require glasses already and if I have to continue squinting, I might go blind all together Appreciate your input! Don |

What principle does the Safe signoscope watermark detector use? Is it pressure and light? |
