The "Bible" for pre-1918 Austria are the Ferchenbauer catalogues ie. Österreich 1850-1918 Handbuch und Spezialkatalog, by Dr. Ulrich Ferchenbauer. newest edition I believe was 2008 and will cost you around $500USD.
Some say that the Michel Austria Specialized Catalog is the best Austria catalogue.
I can't compare since I only buy the Austria Netto Katalog which includes essays, rocket post, first flight covers, Christmas cancels, Balloon post etc not found in other catalogues. Plus ANK lists a lot of varieties, many of which are illustrated.
The ANK does have a few drawbacks though. They have never listed engravers or designers whereas Michel used to years ago.
Also ANK hasn't been clued in yet I guess that the Austrian State Printer no longer has recess engraving nor photogravure presses. The catalogue still list some stamps printed in 2014 as RaTdr./StTdr which is the abbreviation for Photogravure/Steel recess engraved and was the combination printing process used for 50 years Instead it should say offset/etchArt.
Litho - Thanks for your comprehensive feedback. btw - I do not think too many others would have detected the mistake on printing-tech - I wouldn't anyway. You're the expert on that field!
