looks to me like the date was added separately from the circle cancellation. The date font looks very similar to the original IBM Selectric typewriter font. I'm not saying it was typed, I'm just saying that style of font didn't come into use till about 1960.

of course the changeable date slug could be a different font on the device. I bet its the newer stamp issue and whoever cancelled it just made a mistake adjusting the canceling device.

Hey southpaw thanks for taking a look at the stamp. It never ceases me as the knowledge that is here on this forum. If I was blessed with just a fraction of the wealth of knowledge here. Some questions if I may?
Taken that the date and circle cancellation are stamped at different intervals in the process and a good reason to believe the stamp is a 1958 issue...? how would one make a mistake as to install a date 18 years earlier from the present time? If I'm not mistaking what is being said you are saying that the stamp is a 1958 stamp that was suppose to be canceled for postage in 1960 two years after the stamp was issued by the canceller who mistakenly installed a 4 instead of a 6 on to the slug that was suppose to be dated 1960.

Thanks southpaw

Thanks Kevin504 yeah that's what John Becker had stated as well.

Thanks again.
I have a lot more questions but on different issues. I haven't started with W/Fs yet.
Everyone is more than kind here.

Yes, this has been a variety of J80 all along. I am mailing Newby copies of J80, J80a, and J80b so he can scan his stamp along side the others and determine once and for all the shade. So let's hold off for a few days and see what a broader comparison yields.

Looking back at your scan I see the 1940 is not in the same typeface as the rest of the date so I REALLY don't know what to make of it!

Ok lets see what the comparison is:
Stamp top left is J80 Dull carmine shade-wet print-1931 color
Stamp left bottom is J80b-scarlet- wet print-1943-1958 shade
Stamp bottom right is J80a-scralet-dry print-1958-1969 shade
Stamp top right ????
