Ten years ago, I spent my birthday at Many Glaciers Hotel! Wonderful old lodge and spectacular views.

Did it still look like the picture on the postcard?

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or on the Fierce Winters threads. But since this was a fairly common occurrence at Paradise Lodge, I'll add it here. Love the old steam shovel! If you jump back to the previous page, there's another card of the lodge and you can see how high this snow is piled.

I found a bunch more NP postcards, mostly from the Grand Canyon. These are the first two that made it to the scanner. I especially like the first one, which has a great message on the back and a nice, clear territorial Arizona postmark.

Picked up some more early national park views, including a number with Arizona territorial postmarks.

This last one I hadn't heard of before. I wonder what these trees look like now.

Time to break this topic out of dormancy! I found a RPPC of one of the few parks here in Oregon. While technically Oregon Caves isn't a national park, it is a national monument administered by the NPS. Very interesting place -- kind of a throw back to the old school parks. It takes some effort to get there, but well worth a visit.

Thanks for bringing this topic up again, GregAlex. Here are a couple of others, neither of them used unfortunately, but still cool pieces of NP history. The first is Grand Canyon National Park and the second is Mammoth Cave National Park.

Here's one you might like, Desert Dweller. Death Valley NP doesn't get much love, but I'd still like to visit some day.

Thought I'd share some "Hot Stuff".

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the most unique geological, biological, and cherished cultural landscapes in the world. Extending from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes - Kilauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

World famous picture "an awesome display of nature was taken at the very peak of the volcanic activity in Kapoho Town, Hawaii, 1960. (No, the store is no longer there). Apparently, there were no buyers for the store!

Brian, I have a hand-tinted card very much like the top one you posted -- probably from the same printer.

I have many more Kilauea spectacular color postcards. But, here's an interesting one. From my experience, visiting Kilauea as a kid, lava was flowing about 1/3 of a mile away and I picked up some small pieces of lava. Very porous and light. Placed it back as I did not want to upset Madam Pele (Goddess of Fire). The air wasn't pleasant with all that Sulphur smell.

Scorching postcards! To get that close to hot lava they'd be risking their lives. Plenty of opportunity to break through the crust! Wow, that's quite a card.
