Yesterday I went to the stamp show in St. Louis and Dutch Country Auction
had a table there. Again I spoke to the person who discovered the J92 35306 UL
and 35307 UL dull gums in a consignment from a collector in Robert Lee, TX.

This time he told me that the consignor wasn't quite sure where he'd bought
the 4 cent dull gums, but the consignor thought it was somewhere in Texas.

I remember that I bought a lot of postage due plate blocks from various
philatelic windows in several large cities in the early to mid 1980's. Postage
dues were withdrawn in August 1986 by the post office, but were still available
until early 1987 from the Philatelic Sales Division.

I'll keep you updated as I find any other information on the J92 dull gums. If
anyone finds any J92 dull gums please contact me. I'm still looking for the
J96 dull gums. ;>)

The J92 from the Rasdale November 2024 sale and the sale this past weekend are one and the same. The realizations for these seem quite unsettled. Whomever paid $450 with premium ADD just took quite the hit with premium DEDUCT on $300. Ouch. $522 to purchase vs $252 net to sell.

Well I was hoping to report a new J92 dull gum single, but that's not what I found. In the picture below the first J92 is type I, the second is type II, the third is the dull gum which I call type III, and the last is something new, but not a dull gum. The base of the '4' is narrower and farther from 'CENTS' than the other three. I found it by chance on one of on line bidding sites and looking at the picture provided I was hoping it was a dull gum. I'm still looking through my J92s, but I haven't found another, but I'll keep looking and let you know. Please have a look through yours and see of you can find one.

There are all kinds of "setting" varieties on the 1959 Postage Due series. I recall a series of articles in The United States Specialist from a doctor collector, now deceased, who avidly collected and described them. He also wrote an article for The American Philatelist that summarized all the variations, shiny gum or dull gum, known up to that time.

Yes, there are quite a number of rubber matte varieties for the denominations for both dull and shiny gums and I've found several new ones. For example the '1' cent (J89) on plate numbers 26289 and 26290 there are 2 varieties with the '1' is closer to 'CENT' and the other further away much like the 4 cent (J92) listed in the Durland Standard Plate Number catalog.

The doctor you mentioned was David P. Stiff and all his research on the 1959 postage due series is available on The United States Stamp Society's website in their 'United States Specialist' magazine.

Also since 2016 I've found 10 unreported dull gum plate block positions that haven't been reported in the 2016 or 2020 Durland Standard Plate Number catalogs. Here's the list:
J90 35307 UR
J92 35306 UL & LL
J92 35307 UL & LL
J95 35306 UL
J97 37877 LL Type II Gum Type 1B
J97 37877 UL Type II Gum Type 1A
J99 37876 UR Type I Gum type 2
J100 35282 UR.

In the April17th issue of Mekeel's & Stamps there is an ad offering several singles of the J92 dull gum for varying prices depending on condition. It's on page 2.
