Basilika Mariazell in Mariazell, Austria is the most important pilgrimage destination in Austria and one of the most visited shrines in Europe. The original church building was later expanded and redesigned in the Baroque style by Domenico Sciassia from 1644 to 1683.

Here is the Château of Châteaudun, located in the town of Châteaudun, Eure-et-Loir, France. Much of it was built in the 15th century although the keep dates to the 12th century.

The stamp was issued on November 25, 1950, Scott No. 640, Y&T No. 873. Design and engraving by Pierre Gandon (1899-1990), one of France's more accomplished engravers.



On a personal note, in the course of genealogical work I determined two years ago that my great grandmother was born in Châteaudun and was living there as a girl of 13 in October 1870 when the town was captured in a vicious house-to-house battle, sacked, and its center burned during the Franco Prussian war. Some time after her father died in 1872 she removed to Paris where she gave birth in 1883 and then married my great grandfather in 1884 just before they emigrated to the US.

Preah Ko is located in the city of Hariharalaya. The temple was built under the Khmer King Indravarman I in 879 to honor members of the king's family.
Banteay Srei is a 10th-century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, located in the area of Angkor near the hill of Phnom Dei.
Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII.
