Ok, Here We Go Again With Small Queens.

Hi guys...As you know SQ's are probably the hardest stamps to identify..Here is one of my 3cent SQ..The perfs are 12.25 x 12.25...Unitrade shows Scott 41a So I think it is a Scott 41a.

There should be a post like this to have input from every one out there contributing their knowledge of how to identify these stamps..Any links, web pages would help.

Also notice the DOT (guide dot..?) above the "S" in postage.

The back looks like either a slight kiss print or very thin paper.

Robert, 41a is the Montreal Gazette printing, which occurred in late 1889. The 1995 cancel is late for that printing, though not impossible of course. Also your stamp colour looks more like the later vermillion shade. The Gazette printings have a carmine shade.

So BeeSee, could be a 37 then..?

But the perfs are not correct for a 37.

BeeSee, that is 1895, right? I do agree that 1995 is a bit late - Canada pot forgot to assess postage due.

Robert, I think yours is a straight 41. I believe the last printings in the late 90's had perf 12.25 stamps, but someone else may be able to confirm that.

Peter, from May 1889 to Jan 1999 1899 the domestic letter rate inside Canada and to the US was the same, 3c (according to Unitrade 2016 page 30).

BeeSee, I apologize! I did not realize that in Canada the rate was so cheap. Here in the States the domestic rate went from 3 to 4 cent in 1958 I believe.

Without knowing the perfs it is virtually impossible to tell Jimi, especially since there is no lower left dot. Both 37 and 41 Oxidize.

Some color left on it can tell ;)

Likely a 41. Paper also would tell. The better papers were 37.

Also wert, you may be interested to know that the Squared circle cancel is Cumberland, Ont which was a small town of about 300. Therefore it is a relatively scarce cancel. My reference (somewhat dated, but reliable) Moffat/Hanson has it at less than 190 known.
