mdroth - you have some nice stuff there! I don't feel like trying to study the turkish/arabic symbols quite yet... . What a linguistic challenge, my hat of to those of you that do this. However the word '...azari' came up with the following potential matches in my excel database. Good luck in trying to match the arabic spelling listed as well Quote: Trying to figure out towns on the postmarks really adds another dimension (and level of fun!) to stamp collecting, don't you agree? Absolutely - I think it more than doubles the fun Which is my main reason for trying to collect as many different of those town names as possible (in a separate postmark collection) |

...at least until someone comes along that can make sense of the arabic script! I¨m confident someone (with more patience than me) will pin-point your town easily. You're welcome Chris |

Sorry Chris - obviously - it is East. (Been that kinda day...feels like I'm going in the wrong direction all day!) I'm a couple hours west of there - and yes - same earthquake. Adapazari & Izmit are two separate towns - close to one another - both were devastated in the earthquake.
But yes - '...azari' is a common suffix...as Blaamand's list obviously shows! And unless you can decipher the arabic, can't tell for sure.
From my rudimentary language skills, 'pazari' means 'market' in Turkish - like an open-air market of folks selling vegetables etc kind of market. So a very common word... |

Hi Michael,
The 20 paras green stamp with a Greek blue overprint of "S H P" within a triangle coudl possibly be a Mount Athos local although the letter shapes don't match those in the illustration in my Michel catalogue.
These are listed in Michel under "Mönchs-Republik Athos" after the Liannos local post issues. there are no prices for used stamps in my old Michel catalogue.
Does Isfila list these? I wonder what postmarks were used if any.
My first guess would be Edirne (Adrianople) for the postmark which would suggest the overprint was added later.

Nigel, Turkish Postmarks come in a gargantuan 10 Volume set, circa $1,000. |
