What about some Estero stamps and postal history?

I just purchased some, but wasn't able to find much about them on this forum. So why not start a new thread - please anyone - share images and insight about your Estero stamps - Stamps of Italian Offices Abroad - General issues.

Feel free!

So here goes....

Sc# 2 - 1874 - quite a common stamp in itself.
What I like about it is the cancellation: 'Piroscafi Postali Italiani'. Stamp used carrying letter that was brought on an Italian steamer - and cancelled onboard. Unfortunately it's impossible to say which steamer - and on which route it sailed - still I like the evidence of it's postal history . If it's not a fake, that is....

Italian Offices Abroad - General issue - Sc# 5 - 1878

Another stamp from the same purchase - and with the same cancellation 'Piroscapi Postali Italiani'. This stamp looks surprisingly fresh.... Hmmm I'm suspecting it's a fake cancellation, but who knows? Any experts on the field please feel free to let me down

Blaamand, fantastic presentation of this interesting study! And nice examples of the Piroscapi cancellations. I am no expert at all, but they look authentic to me. Anyhow you can not be let down, as they are beautiful and carries a lot of history even so if they have been given a fake make up:)

Do you know of a index for Barred Numeral cancellations for Estero?

Good question - I have been looking around, and the best reference I've found so far in one single source is this:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/...eneral_issue

I have found some more info in Sassone, and my list combined looks like this:

234: Alexandria (1863-84)
235: Tunis (1852-97)
3051: Tripoli Di Barberia (1869-1911)
3336: La Goletta , Tunisia (1879-97)
3364: Susa, Tunisia (1880-97)
3840: Assab (1883-93)
3862: Massaua (1885-93)

However I would really love if someone else can come up with a full list . And a list of barred numerals of Italy itself as well would be great....

....and once on the topic of numeral cancellations of 'Estero', here are some of mine:

Sc.#9 - 1874 - Boxed postmark '234' - Alexandria
Sc.#7 - 1878 - Barred numeral '3051' - Tripoli.

These stamps are unfortunately riddled with fake cancellations, so I can only hope mine are genuine. Anyone more knowledgeable is invited to comment.

For Italy, if you type in the number or locality here you will get the locality or number:

Here is also an article in Italian about barred numerals:

Wow - lot's of responses

22crows - Thank you for the links - brilliant!

The searchable database is super. Only downside is one is depending on a internet connection... The ideal would be to get a complete list that one could download and convert into excel. Still, from the other link I followed one link after another until I found this list. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annul...rale_a_punti Unfortunately this list is far from complete - but at least a starting point

Cool to see that obvious forgery. Thanks to you we will know one typical indication of forgery to keep in mind

Another obvious give-away that your 20c is a forgery, is that the stamp itself is actually an Italian stamp. The design of the Estero stamps had their corner ornamanets changed slightly from their original Italian counterparts. Very easy to see on the comparison below.

Absolutely - You are usually the expert on far-away unheard of places! I suppose all general collectors have new fields yet to discover - which I find very comforting. No need for a boring day in the world of WW-collectors
