The best printers in the world could not reliably center their issues. Could the forgers issuing stamps for the stamp trade be expected to do better in the quantities they were producing?

When judging the early forgers, keep in mind that in the early days, there was not generally an attempt to "fool" collectors. Many of these were sold in price lists with prices that varied by quality of the simulated reproduction. A collector in 1895 is likely to have completely missed out on many issues from 1870. The facsimiles offered the opportunity to fill spaces.
