Very nice to see the Faroes flag label.
I think it says something like "For orphans" (as in "for fatherless").
I had a very happy holiday in the Faroes many years ago. We flew there from the UK via Denmark.
I still have a stuffed puffin in my living room as a souvenir.

We're hoping to go to the Faroe Islands next year, some time in July. It will more than likely rain. Not sure I'll bring back a stuffed though, as I prefer to see them in the wild (this one from the Shetland Islands a couple of years ago). I've got a Lighthouse album complete from 1975 to 2000 but this is too many pages to post. I'm sure I have the provisional overprints tucked away somewhere. I'll post them if I can find them. There's a good argument to be made that they are British Military Occupation overprints, making them the oddest of the KGVI issues. |

Here are scans of the Faroe Islands provisionals. First up, is the 2 öre hand-stamped on 5 öre, prepared in January 1919 when they ran out of stamps after a rise in postal rates, and used until 31 January. Bisected 4 ore stamps were also valid for postage at this time, but I don't have any on cover. Next are the World War II occupation issues, the KGVI issues which are often missing from collections because nobody thinks about including them (or knows that they are Allied occupation issues). The country was occupied by the British to prevent occupation by the Germans. Stamps of Denmark were overprinted in Torshavn. They were issued between November 1940 and May 1941, and valid for postage until 1945. |

Wow. A few dollars there Tim. Thanks for sharing, not often seen close up. Must be nice to have the keys sets, in any collection. Your Thorshavn Date stamp, appears to have substituted an "E" with a reversed "3" The bisect appears on a Postcard face, produced by the Faroese Philatelic Society. ----------------------- 1977 Personal Page 4A Issues with selvedge. Unusual: Fishing Vessels, lowest value is the most expensive. |

I hadn't noticed the upside-down "3" for "E".
Thorshavn also used "F" at this time.
I guess these stand for "formiddag" and "eftermiddag", morning and afternoon in Danish.
These two THORSHAVN postmarks (with upside-down 3 and "F) are listed in Eric Wowern's old "Faroe Islands 1980" catalogue as in use between 1917 and 1930. |

Thanks for the heads-up on this oddity. I noticed the inverted '3' on the slug as I edited the scan. I'm sure there are Danish experts out there who can help? Maybe I'll re-post the scans under a separate thread to generate some discussion. Here's the earliest fore-runners illustrated on Faroe "Europa" stamps from 1979. |

Lovely stamps and a place I'd love to visit one day. It looks a little bit similar to Skye. |

New arrival via Swap. The Whales set values at $12 mint, I received 3 sets! Faroe Islands is thought to translate to "Sheep Islands" British Field Post Offices in the Faroes. |
