Thanks Vayolene
I'll have to check Forbin and Fulcher again

Spent half an hour with Forbin, did not see it

Billets
This is how I understand billets.... (Military)

late Middle English (originally denoting a short written document): from Anglo-Norman French billette, diminutive of bille (see bill1). The verb is recorded in the late 16th century, and the noun sense, 'a written order requiring a householder to lodge the bearer, usually a soldier', from the mid 17th century; hence the current meaning.

But it could also mean a short piece of wood, or a short metal bar

Salida in the phrase failed translation
(Salida = exit)

Even Fulcher had question marks on some Spanish expressions.

Tough ID journey
a bit like looking for a one ended stick.

Well Vayolene, found the country, thanks to you,
but unlisted.
I'll have to email Spanish Blogs, see if I can pin it down.

Puerto Rico
5c Billets
colour : Lie de Vie (Burgundy)

Unlisted in Either Forbin (not searchable, why I missed it) or Fulcher (searchable) (1894 issue)

I am getting the feeling these are export taxes on manifests
Let's see what the intelligentsia says.

There is also a 2nd Retouch of the 1c (1885) and 5c. (1886) where the opening in the hair forms a semi-circle. However, the mouth was left unimproved.

....and thank you RK1468 for offering the 2nd retouch
I have just discovered these, and will hold glassines I had marked "duplicates"
of the Alfonso issues.

I'll check to see if I have any, hiding in that glassine.
Saved your image for reference.

Wow!
Thanks vayolene, I must agree with Geoff,
Gooseberries (Yum!) are just a greyer hue than "emerald" in my eyesight.
(Always pronounced them "Guzberries")

Gooseberries are no longer common sadly. When I was a boy my Dad had several bushes on his allotment so we used to have them frequently, in various puddings. Green gooseberries need cooking with sugar. Eaters are even less common and rather than green are a translucent browny red and very sweet. Neither look like the colour of those Machins!
