While I haven't run into problems with mail/package theft (other than the 2 cases I mentioned of stamps removed), there are areas/neighborhoods in the US where mail theft is a serious problem. I would venture to say that some of those who are worried, are so because of a bad personal experience or someone they know had mail swiped.

Phi_Atelic --- Yes, I also received mail with pen marks through or swirled across the stamps. The carrier is the one who usually does this before placing the mail in the mailbox. If they see that the stamps on the envelope do no have a cancel mark (or have a
very weak cancel), then they cancel it by hand using a pen. Most carriers could care less, and do not bother, however, there are some that are obsessed with dong it. I once had a carrier scribble pen marks all over the stamps from a letter that I received from Japan! I guess she wanted to make sure I didn't reuse the Japanese stamps when I mailed my next letter here in the USA.

Cougar01, wow okay we both get pen scribbled by the carrier... she (my carrier) must be tired of all the mail she has to deliver and finally lashed out because the package postage was paid with a priority mail label, the stamps on the package were purely freebies and extras, n9t for postage. Lol

Oh my goodness area66, I think that would be enough for somebody to "go postal" as they say here in the states.

But this was only to reply to your post Phil, on average it's very good experiences I have, many time they don't even cancel the stamps.
