Peter, fabulous information, my gratitude. New album page required but no problem. Kudos to the Akidu Godivari, I searched everywhere for that. Not in Falling Rain. (Akividu is however) http://www.indianphilatelics.com/ca...-type-1.html Vadophil: Issue No. 24 By Baroda Philatelic Society Is Akividu a village or town? Officially it is not a Municipality but a Panchayat and Firca. Yet it has all the trappings of a town. This village/town had floating population always from neighbouring villages and villages from Kolleru Lake as well. Akividu had a fully functional Post Office, where you can send telegrams, buy money orders, send registered mail and open a Postal Savings account. Of course there was trunk call facility, which was a small rectangle closet, you can talk your lungs out. Mail was delivered twice a day, morning and evening, by a Postman who walked or rode a bicycle along his route. In addition money orders and Telegrams were delivered by a designated Postman. Akividu had a Police Station with Sub-Inspector, Head Constable, Writer and Policemen. In those days Policemen and Elementary School Teachers were most under paid. Cinderellas. During October 1979 two stamps inscribed "HAPPY CHILD NATION'S PRIDE" with face value of 50 p. and 1 r.were issued to post offices. These were intended for sale as charity lables, without postal validity. The proceeds going to a Child Welfare fund. It would seem that the instructions issued were unclear, however,as some post offices sold these labels as postage stamps and accepted mail franked with them. TB Seal 1982 |

Postmark. GREAT EASTERN HOTEL Great Eastern Hotel was founded by David Wilson in 1841 and was known as Auckland Hotel. Wilson's Hotel, Auckland Hotel, Hall of Nations, Japani Hotel, Jewel of the East are the other names of Great Eastern Hotel itself. Mark Twain described it as the best hotel East of the Suez on his voyage along the Equator. Rudyard Kipling mentioned the hotel in "The City of Dreadful Night" It has been host to such notables as Queen Elizabeth II & Nikita Khruschev. The hotel was privatised in November 2005 with the help of Pricewaterhouse Coopers. The hotel has been re-christened The Grand Great Eastern, Kolkata. Currently, the hotel has over 244 rooms. India : Used Abroad : Aden 8 Bar "B" Rectangle Fairly common. Sc#37 1882
The barred rectangular B killer is Renouf type 18/Cooper type 34 simplex cancel (introduced in 1879) which was used by all post offices under Mumbai Circle. Without the accompanying cds part (separately struck in case of simplex killer or at the left of the killer in case of the duplex type) showing the PO name, it is practically impossible to attribute the 8-bar B killers to Adan or to conclusively label it to be Robertshaw type 20/Graham type C14/Proud type K12/Lowe type C11 cancel of Adan. Here is an example of the same Renouf type 18/Cooper type 34 simplex B obliterator, struck by Malegão SPO, Malegão (20.5579°N 74.5089°E), now in Nashik district of Maharashtra state. |
