Hi Chasa and thank you - so you were interested more in the town - now we know that it's Sherrill, which is like the 17c stamp more of a common precancel, right?
If so, I just want to add a question which fits fine here: I know the three famous precancels "reading up" on the red 20c Golden Gate stamp. But I see very often other precancels reading up, on different stamps. So why are the three famous ones famous? Because they are bureau? Are all other reading up not bureau, or is the rarity related to the stamps issue?
(I also have a Detroit on 20c Golden Gate "reading up", but different font than the famous one.)
Yes, because it was mis-printed at the US BEP facility. Their quality control was very good, as opposed to local precancels done in the local post offices. The others are all locals. On the 1922 issues, the 5$ precancel is always valuable, the 2$ is unusual, the others not usually premium denominations.
yes, the local Detroit folks asked the POD for a precancel device... the POD had their supplier make this... it was sent to Detroit... the Detroit PO used it willy nilly... and often - it is very common
thank you as alway, Chasa, your precancel knowledge helps a lot here. I will show later or tomorrow in a new thread here two very interesting precancel stamps with double precancel of 2 different types each.
