That is, in fact, a grill. Either an 'E' grill (likely) or an 'F' grill. (Looks like an 'E' - can't tell from picture - but looks too big for an 'F') Which would make your stamp a Scott #90. But a much better scan is needed to properly identify/verify. Looks legit, but pictures can distort grills easily... |

Thank you MDRoth, does a grill make it more valuable?

If real, it makes it considerably more valuable. According to my Scott Specialized (2012) a used #69 is $100 and a used #90 is $400. (Of course, these values are for VF condition, which yours is not. Someone with a more recent edition of the catalog can chime in with more current values...) |

the paper feels very thin too almost like tissue paper
the centering leaves a lot to be desired! |

The centering is very average for these. Finding a well centered piece is difficult and you will pay a premium. Overall I would have no problem displaying your stamp in your collection. |

No grills on the 1857-61's.
The image makes it hard but I think we are looking at a double grill here. Not going to even try counting points... |

Lawrence, For purposes of seeing the grill better, try a scan just like the one above, but exaggerate the contrast and light/dark parameters to extremes. |
