I like going to stamp shows and getting lied too ! It was upsetting at first but going to so many shows all over it gets to be the usual .

Dealer says to me ...."I can't go lower on the price because I am selling it for a friend "

Dealers says to me ....."I can sell it only for XXX , because that is what I got into it "

Dealers says to me ...."This is from my own collection and I don't really want to let it go "

Dealer says to me ....."This is going to be the next HOT AREA to collect"

Dealer says to me ....."I just bought this box and have not had time to go thru it yet but you can take it"

Dealers says to me ...."I got something for you " then pulls out a collection from under the table and it is full of unidentifed forgeries .

Dealer says to me ....."I bought too much stuff and need to get some money to cover this purchase ,can I help ?"

Those aren't always lies. I've heard several of those from dealers that I absolutely trust. Not all dealers are charlatans.

I had one....
"Ooh havn't seen that stamp before...I'll have to check the catalogue, leave your phone number and I'll call you"

Having said that, just about all our local chaps are bonzer, one fellow I always seek out, lets you flip through the table credenza's, pick out the stamps you want, (as you are trusted to tally the value yourself).

You wave and say like "$18.50" "Right" he says, places them in glassine, and gives you a 20% discount.
Amazing trust.

Just once I'd like a dealer to tell me (pointing to a $100 stamp, and say I am in it for $3 since I bought it from a collection I broke down, but I will sell it to you for $60 firm, because thats what the fair retail value is based in cat. To which you then say 60% is outrageous, or...instead...wait did this guy just totally be fully honest with me - maybe this is a fair price to allow the dealer to make money, and his price is largely irrelevant but his forthcoming honest and transparent nature earns him respect and separates him from the charlatans at the next table.

Footnote: I don't need him to share the part where the collection he broke down originated from a grieving widow who he paid 500 for a 10,000 collection and she was thrilled.

If this was a common belief by dealers and others, then the catalog is setting the market and no the other way around. But then Scott does not price most stamps in various conditions since many stamps sold based upon cat, are not actually in VF condition.

Worst to the best,
I just bought a swag of stamps from Hipstamp, vendor "Oldman".
He underestimated the postage,
hence I got the bundle for about $1.50

Ne'er a single complaint from him.

We cannot have that! I made extra paypal to cover his expense.
