"Well, it's the NYT, so you were expecting real news coverage?"
This is a very misleading statement. It's also off the subject of an editorial or personal opinion article about stamp collecting. But Just FYI, the NYT is the single best newspaper published today in the U.S. I imagine you have some political differences with its editorial policy, but that doesn't change the fact that it and the Washington Post and a few other newspapers like the Wall Street Journal, etc. are generally considered the most effective news gatherers and analyst in the country. Of "real" news.
As for this opinion piece, it was hardly intended as "news". It was the opinion of one person who, somewhat misleadingly, judged stamp collecting not to have paid off well. That it's a silly editorial makes the NYT no different from every other news source, all of which publish things that are silly or even misleading at times. No sense jumping down their throats, though, since both you and I are also wrong on occasion.
