Resistance Monuments (1940 - 1945)
Sculptures:
7 c(ent): Oorlogsmonument Waalwijk (Johannes Anton Raedecker), and 'De Verwoeste Stad'
15 c(ent): 'De Dokwerker' (Mari Andriessen), and Oorlogsmonument Waalwijk
40 c(ent): 'De Verwoeste Stad' (Ossip Zadkine), and 'De Dokwerker'
NVPH nrs. 836 - 838

The Netherlands had declared itself a neutral country at the start of World War II, as it had done during World War I. However, on 10 May 1940, the Germany army invaded the Netherlands. On 5 May 1945, the German army surrendered to the allied forces. May 1965, therefore, saw the 25th anniversary of the start and 20th anniversary of the end of World War II.

On the occasion of these anniversaries, a set of three stamps dedicated to monuments related to the resistance was issued. The stamps depict three sculptures commemorating events of the war.

The 7 c. stamp depicts a sculpture by Johannes Raedecker commemorating the inhabitants of Waalwijk who were killed during the war. The statue located in the Burgermeester Moonenlaan in Waalwijk represents a man falling in front of a firing squad. Among the people to whom the monument is dedicated is the town's mayor Eduard Moonen who was executed by a German firing squad on 6 September 1944. In the background is the monument 'De Verwoeste Stad' also depicted on the 40 c. stamp.

The 15 c. stamp depicts 'De Dokwerker' (The Dockworker) by Mari Andriessen commemorating the general strike of 25 and 26 February 1941 in protest against the persecution of Jews. The monument is located in Amsterdam where the strike started. In the background is the war monument in Waalwijk depicted on the 7 c. stamp.

The 40 c. stamp depicts a sculpture by Ossip Zadline, located in Rotterdam, commemorating the German bombardment of Rotterdam that took place on 14 May 1940. The German Luftwaffe dropped bombs on the second city of the Netherlands, Rotterdam. After this bombardment that killed 711 people, the Netherlands surrendered as Germany threatened to bombard other major cities. In the background is the sculpture 'De Dokwerker' depicted on the15 c. stamp.

4d: 'Charles William Lambton' by Sir Thomas Lawrence
9d: 'Mares and Foals in a River Landscape' by George Stubbs
1/6: 'Coming Out of School' by L. S. Lowry
Stanley Gibbons nrs. 748 - 750

On 10 July 1967, the GPO issued a set of three stamps depicting the works of British painters. The 4d stamp (also shown on page 10) depicts a portrait of Charles William Lambton by Sir Thomas Lawrence. It was painted in 1825. Also known as 'The Red Boy' and 'Master Lambton,' the oil-on-canvas painting is part of the collection of the National Gallery.

The 9d stamp reproduces a painting of mares and foals in a river landscape that is part of a group of paintings painted between 1760 and 1769 for aristocratic patrons by George Stubbs. The painting is part of the Tate Gallery's collection.

The 1/6 stamp depicts an oil painting on plywood by Laurence Stephen Lowry from the Tate Gallery's collection. Lowry painted the scene of children coming out of a school in 1927. According to a letter from the artist, this is not a depiction of a particular place but is based on recollections of a school seen in Lancashire.
