A gift from my son, and it came with the following description:



Unfortunately, I am not able to make out the date, but I thought the year is 1949 rather than 1948 as given in the description (Ok, my I might be wrong as my eyes are failing).

I am curious - Is the mentioned variety 'Stop after Japan, ACSC J1' significant?

My son purchased the cover from a non-Aussie vendor (I understand it is a vendor from the UK). I supposed that's why it's caveated in the description 'confirmation is required'.



Good to know that my eyesight is not as bad as I think it is, that I could still make the last digit out as a '9'.

And yes, the dot after JAPAN looks more like an ink smudge rather than a dot, but at least my son got the cover not because of the variety (we did not notice it until the cover arrived). My late wife loved Australia, especially the Kangaroos and Koalas. She collected covers with only the ½d orange Kangaroo stamp, and so this cover fits very nicely into the collection, which I am continuing in her memory.

Your wife's orange Kangaroo, was "DUKE" a favourite kangaroo, at Melbourne Zoological Gardens.

As an aside, I always wondered if Monty Python's "Life of Brian" got it wrong, when the beggar was disappointed by "half a denarii" donation for his life's story (denarii being plural )

I recently picked up a few BCOF items from the APS Store, and noticed some possible varieties. My ACSC version is 1995, so it may not have the latest items and prices. So, let's see what everyone thinks.

1/2d Orange. A broken bottom to the B, but I think this is just an inking issue as I see other thin areas throughout. The J of Japan seems a little low, but I am going to call this one "normal".


1d Purple Brown. I don't see anything here. Calling this one "normal".


3d Dark Brown. Still, nothing exciting. "Normal". Not too interesting so far.


6d Dull Brown. There is a break to the bottom of the F. Not listed in ACSC, as far as I can see. Calling this one "interesting".


1/- Dull Green. Darn. Back to "normal", I think.


2/- Maroon. Ahh, finally. This one has a "distorted B", which is J6e in my ACSC. Notice that the color appears weaker. A good find.



5/- Dull Lake. Oh, I had such high hopes for this one. At a distance, I thought I had a "no Stop after F" variety. But, I can see just a small nibble there. Too bad. But, I also note that the J is very low. I don't see this in the picture of Overprint Varieties. Can someone help me out here?

All these beyond my budget and knowledge.

Aus. UPS 497 was located in Kure from Feb 13,1946 to 1950.
As these dates are not from official records, both dates can be extended.

Aus. UPS 388 was never used in either of the places recorded in Stobbs which is outdated and full of inaccuracies.
