Rene,
this is all open to interpretation.
Generally speaking, we, most of us, take the issue of the Penny Black of Great Britain as the beginning, but that really is only a reference point.
The oldest Postal Service is China (4,000 BC)
The (believed to be) first Postage stamp with mucilage, was issued by Paris on the 8th April 1653
Organised by Renouard de Villayer.

Welcome to Aniline Ink.

Aniline ink: a water-soluble ink which fluoresces under ultraviolet light; such as used on Roosevelt Small Die Proofs. Askphil.

Always wise to soak briefly in cold water, warm /hot water will have the ink become fugitive, as shown here by a previous caretaker.

Unable to locate, anywhere on the internet, the papermaker's watermark
on the Roosevelt 1949 Souvenir Sheet.

I believe it is similar to the mud map here.
Teasingly...Made in "Canao" ? Made in "Canada" ?

Any members aware of an image?
Thanks.

When Renden mentioned Sierra Leone in regards to the first adhesive stamp, perhaps he was thinking of the first self-adhesive stamp.

That is amazing piece of detective work.
I had spent hours looking everywhere.

Sc#610 with marginal markings.
Cannot translate the Portuguese.

Guess:
Engraved in the plate is a tiny "S"
Perhaps the paper maker's icon Howard Smith Canada ?
Perhaps these were printed in Canada?

This would explain the other values not being on watermarked paper.

MEMORY AND REPRESENTATION OF BRAZILIAN JOURNALISM:
the case of the postage stamp

ABSTRACT
This paper discusses the form in which the postage stamp contributes to the construction of the Brazilian journalism representation. It takes into account for this purpose a conception of this artifact both as a media and as a semiotic text, and its close relationship with the press.

The identified and analysed sample consists of regular and commemorative postage stamps issued by the Brazilian General Post Office during the twentieth century. This work proposes to correlate a recurring theme with the Brazilian historical context, with regard to journalistic practices.

As a conclusion, we consider that the visibility of journalism made possible
through postage stamps not only points out the relevant people and their contributions to journalism practices, but also makes a clear association with the ideals of a journalism of outrage focused on great social causes.

Key words: Brazil. Journalism. Memory. Postage Stamps.Social Representation.
