Set of four, one stamp shows stylized beach umbrella.



(Kris Rascher: The Cyprus stamp set uses snow flake, butterfly, red heart, and maple leave as the symbols for the four seasons. Each symbol is held by one person as the main design element of each stamp.)

The Autrian-born artist Karoly Ferenczy (1862-1917) painted a warm Oktober day in the orchard. The same painting was used on a second stamp in 2007; the original can be seen in the National Gallery in Budapest. The gentleman is reading his newspaper.

The Royal 9 Tiered Umbrella.

The Royal Nine-Tiered Umbrella (Nopphapadon Mahasawettachat), officially called the Nine-Tiered Great White Umbrella of State) is considered the most sacred and ancient of the royal regalia of Thailand. A royal umbrella (also called a chatra) consists of many tiers, five for the crown prince (or the viceroy), seven for an unconsecrated king, and nine for a fully sovereign Thai king. Until the coronation rites are completed the new king will not be able to sit on the throne under the nine-tiered umbrella.

Otto Nagel must have known this gentleman personally. The painting is titled 'The Birthday of the Forester Scharf' (1934) and he is probably sitting on his patio under his black umbrella and relaxing among good friends. The painting can be seen in the National Gallery in Berlin. Also stamp honoring the artist.

Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) called this painting "The poor Poet". The poet has a cold and feels miserable in his somewhat shabby quarters. The stove is not working and he has even nailed an umbrella to the ceiling to keep out the rain. Spitzweg's paintings are a marvel of detail. Stamp issued for his 200th birthday.

It amazes me you guys still find Umbrellas on stamps.
My lot were exhausted.

What a curious painting Kris, he even nailed his top hat to the wood heater flue?

Another of Carl Spitzweg's paintings. This one he called "A Sunday Stroll" - stamp issued 100 years after his death.

I have not come across this painter, before.
I must say, I like his art. Lovely stuff Kris.

The mere fact the gentleman is holding his hat on his cane, to me offers authenticity.

Edgar Degas, born Edgar de Gas (1834-1917), was a French painter and sculptor. One of his favorite subjects was ballet dancers; in the painting featured on the stamp a dancer bows to the audience after receiving a bouquet of flowers (1970). Gandon did the engraving; the original is in pastel.
