those who are physically attending are already making significant investments towards travel, lodging, and food.
This is a big factor to me. With a hotel room over $100, gas likely over $40, food more than gas, etc. it can be a big factor for those who want to buy online - more cash for stamps.
Shows have to offer more to all levels to stay viable. The meaningful seminars at Birmingham were minimal. All signs showed it was not going to be successful. It was not the concept (single frame exhibits) but location, collectors in area, committed dealers, content, etc.
Modern exhibiting rules on presentation limit the educational for all levels of collectors. That is why many exhibits at museums have audio tracks to supplement. It is not like a roadshow for Smithsonian exhibits.
