Good case in point regarding writing on covers. I recently acquired this printed circular on ebay. It's a schedule of exams for Harvard College dated May 17, 1858. The plating on the front is wrong--the stamp is 79R7, not 39R7 (this is already erased). There is a 99.9 percent chance that the other pencil notations on front are non-contemporaneous and will probably be erased as well. |

One good thing is that I don't see a lot of cover front writing that appears recent. I think that the practice has slowed significantly. |

This is probably the most bone-headed example that I have. The plate 2 crack has now moved to the right pane. Who knew? |

I am surprised that we don't see a lot of covers with a big rubber stamp on back saying "This cover passed through Joe's Stamp Shop, PO BOX 123, Anywhere USA. Write us with your want list." Don |

Staying with the writing on covers topic, an example of identifications changing over the years. Likely when #25 TI was written on this cover it was identified correctly. But it's know considered T II and a #25A. Another reason to dislike this practice. |
