Most of the manuscript cancels are pen cancels as well. As I recall, about half of these were canceled with a black "X" in the center as well as an "X" in each corner. Added: After perusing my Scott, I have concluded that pen cancel premiums tend to usually be less than all but the most common "color" cancel premiums.
Maybe Fredc would lightly dampen a spot on the pen cancel too see if it is water resistant ;that could provide a clue to the type of ink used.1869 was a transition period for certain types of inks.
