Stamps With Words And/Or Numbers As The Main Design

On July 19, 2012 Ireland issued a set of two stamps to publicize its participation in the Summer Olympic Games in London. The 82c stamp from this set is shown here.

Set of five, one stamp shows the word LOVE.

Here is the much-studied Notopfer, or "blue flea" tax stamp of western Germany. This stamp did not pay postage, but it was a required two pfennig tax for all letters and parcels mailed in occupied western Germany, and later the Federal Republic of Germany from December 1, 1948 through March 31, 1956. Stamp was created to pay for costs arising from resupply efforts for West Berlin caused by the Soviet blockade.

Over 10 billion of these stamps were printed. There are many printing, watermark, perforation, and other varieties within the basic imperforate and perforated stamps issued.

This September 24, 1950 issue (Sc #C137) of Bolivia features a 1.40 Bs. surcharge overprint of a 1947, 3Bs. airmail stamp. Overprint is inscribed "Triumph of Democracy" and celebrates the first anniversary of a successful military suppression of a revolt by working poor people of that country.

On May 7, 1963 the Netherlands issued this stamp (Sc #415) commemorating the centenary of international postal consultations.

The Netherlands issued a se-tenant pair of 80c stamps on May 27, 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Marshal Plan for the recovery of Europe. This stamp (Sc #964) from the pair features a June 5, 1947 quote from General George C. Marshall explaining the rationale of his Plan.

During 2002 (through July) the Netherlands issued twelve mini sheets of 12 stamps showing "text" flags of each of the country's 12 provinces. Each mini sheet has a different, pictorial label on the central row of selvage between the two vertical rows of six stamps. Blank, colored labels run on the left and right marginal selvage of each pane. Each individual stamp is filled with text, shaping the elements of the province's flag.

Then on August 30, 2002 the country issued a thirteenth mini sheet (Mi #2029KB) showing one each of the provincial "text" flags, with vignettes on the side margins of the pane. That mini sheet is shown here.

The two individual stamps shown here are province Gelderland (Mi #2001) issued April 23, 2002, and province North Brabant (Mi #2003) issued May 7, 2002. A close-up pic of the North Brabant stamp is also shown.

The stamp set pays tribute to Julio Cortázar (1914-1984), an Argentine novelist and essayist known as one of the founders of the Latin American Boom. One stamp shows text CORTAZAR and numeral 100 in comic book style fonts.

On January 31, 1966 the Netherlands issued this set of two semi-postal stamps Sc #s B407-8) to honor the Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM). The ICEM was formed to deal with the problem of the 11 million refugees and displaced persons in Europe as a result of World War II. The ICEM has transformed into the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Inscription on stamp says "takes them to safe haven."

Here is Austria's February 15, 1985 stamp (Mi #1804) commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Vocational Training Institute (BFI). A four-layered "bfi" dominates the design.
