Hope you don't mind Rod, but this is not on a Steiner page! This very tatty cover was sent to Major Woodgate (full name and rank later was Major General Sir Edward Prevost Woodgate) from London on June 1st 1880 to Jamaica. Arrival mark to reverse is Kingston Jamaica on June 19th. He was Brigade Major in Jamaica from February 1880, have yet to find out when he left there. He died in 1900 in Natal, a Zulu war and Boer War veteran. Stamp is SG153 plate 16.
Best regards
DavidR

Hi David,
Far from it ! All contributions, to the knowledge base is welcomed.
A cracking cover, rich with history, thanks for sharing.

"West India" !

I am a tad apologetic, for pages with huge gaps, but this collection is garnered by just "swaps", I have never bought a Jamaican stamp if I recall correctly.

I very rarely buy stamps from a particular country. Occasionally GB or early France, but otherwise all my stuff comes from wins at my local auction houses. It's always fascinating to buy an old collection to see what turns up, as this cover did!

Could be. In that case it's Order of the Garter. This appears to be a private letter rather than anything official. Will dig around the Major's history a bit more. Cheers Rod,

I believe that this Edward Woodgate is the Major on DavidR's envelope above:
