angore - That is absolutely true. Its first that very reason that I do not even look at the catalog at this point. Just a quick, basic sort to get things 8nto manageable piles, then get into the nuts and bolts of each issue. I also went print any pages until I know how deep my stamps are going to allow me to go.

OK, the preliminary sorting of the loose stamps is finished. That BIG pile in the upper right are all airmails.

The album pages I'll leave intact for the moment, and pull them off as I identify and file the loose stamps. Since they are mounted in, sort of, chronological order, they will aide me in finding them in the catalog.

Also, while sorting through the loose stamps, I came across a couple interesting glassines. One has, what appears to be, Christmas seals, or some other charity labels.

The other has a good quantity of one stamp from the Colombian state of Tolima, and looks like a good opportunity for cancels, types and varieties.

I love this kind of stuff!

Next up is to start sorting, identifying and filing individual piles.

Still sorting, but trying to do a little research as I go.
For example:
I'm finding that the Scott cat. will be about as much help with some of these issues, as it was with the Brazilian issues.

Specifically, the numeral issues of 1908.
Scott states the perforations are 13 1/2, 10, and compound. But what they don't say is which issues can be found with which perforation.

Here some of mine so far:
Row 1 - perf 10
Row 2 - perf 13 1/2
Row 3 - perf 10 x 13

One observance: The two 1c stamps in the 3rd row, that measure 10 x 13 1/2, are also missing the imprint (Scott 326a)

If anyone has any online sources for further information on Colombian stamps, I'd be interested.

perf12 - Yes, that is perfect! Thanks for posting that.

I know there is Philatelic Congress book that is available, from 1957, but really much prefer to look for online information options first.

Colombia:

I finally got all the Colombian stamps sorted, id'd and filed and ready for mounting.

Printed out the first pages tonight and had to make a custom page to accommodate some extra shades and cancels I had.

Unfortunately, the first 2 pages are completely empty for now so I won't bother showing them. The other pages are also pretty sparse until you get to the 1880's perforated issues.

It also looks like I'm going to need to upgrade some of these. Anyway, it's a start I guess.

This last page is the one I had to design. This is where I start to have multiple duplicates of some issues, and I will be making such pages for extra shades and interesting cancels. At some point I will do some more research n the cancels themselves and may make some more in depth pages for those. For now, this will do.

Spent some time tonight customizing some more Steiner pages. I'm not sure why, but for some sets he did include Scott listed shades, but on others he chose not to. That's what I was doing is adding the Scott listed shades into some of these sets. I also included some empty boxes for interesting, to me at least, cancels.

Here are 2 of those redesigned pages. On the 2nd page, you will notice there are 2 10c stamps in 1 mount. that's because I mistakenly forgot to add a box for one of the shades and didn't notice until I started mounting. Oh well. I do not like having to redo pages after I start mounting, so it will stay for now. Not the first time and it won't be the last. But I'm pretty willing to share even my miscues.

I have faced the same situation. You create a custom page, start mounting, then find an error. Correct or let it it go.

angore - Exactly! Life is too short to worry too much about too little of thing. If, at some point in time, I need to upgrade the page, to add other items, I can always fix it then.

Tonight I am taking a break from Colombia, and doing a little reference work. I have a couple hundred older STAMPS magazines from the 1940's and 50's and have been wanting to scan in interesting articles to have on file. Just like my current worldwide collection of stamps, I have been hoarding these for a while with no clear sign of what to do with them.
Sure, there have found some interesting articles in the past, but since I was only interested in certain countries up until recently, I never did a thorough search through them.
Now, since I am a declared worldwide collector, I am finding many more pertinent articles, as well as just FUN articles.
My plan is to scan and convert them to .pdf they will be much easier to organize and find from now on.

Here is a FUN article, actually a short story, from 1947. I remember first reading this when I got these magazines about 40 years ago. It really got my collecting juices flowing back then and is one of the reasons I LOVE going to flea markets and estate sales, looking for my own FINDS.

Enjoy, and HAPPY NEW YEAR to all, if I am not back on before.

spain_1850

I found this thread today and read completely through it. It was a very enjoyable read and I thank you for the excellent tutorial/narrative. Even though I have been concentrating on several specialized areas as of late, you have given me much food for thought about the feasibility of starting a worldwide collection. I hope you have a Happy New Year and I am looking forward to new chapters in your saga.

Got some more pages printed and mounted today. I must say though that adding more spaces for varieties and shades makes the pages look even more empty. But that just gives me more incentive to fill them. Here are a few of the pages I managed today, including making spaces for the perforation varieties of the numeral issues. I also figured out the different dies for the 2c and 5c numeral issue, and found a few of them in my stash.

Took another sidestep from Colombia tonight, when I ran across these large format Argentine revenues, that I forgot I had. I believe I posted them on Rods Argentina thread, but I figured I might as well give them a semi-permanent home in my own Argentina album.

A few of them, as you can see, were too large for the page border, so I improvised and just went outside the border. No big deal. These may be mounted differently in the future if (or when) I figure out more information on them.

I can't really find much on the internet about them, so the information on my pages is probably sketchy at best. The date is just a guess, since most of the "cancels" seem to be dated in that era.

Lovely work S1850, I am impressed.
May I save those scans for my revenue catalogue assistance please?

If you get around to doing the difficult Argentine departmentals, give us an email, I can probably fill a lot of your gaps, I have a bucket of them.

Rod, thank you! I didn't realize they were so big until I tried fitting them on the page. I normally don't like to mount items vertically like that, but I guess you gotta make some exceptions.

You may absolutely save scans. I am happy I can help anyone in any way.

I will send you my list of Departmentals when I get home tonight. I do already have my album pages printed and mounted, but they are, to say the least, pretty sparse.
