The minisheet depicts the fortress of Valenca do Miño, on the bank of River Miño near the border with Spain. The gothic and baroque military architecture was upgraded during the 17th and 18th century, forming the present bulwarked system.

Fort Beekenberg
June 16, 1953
Fort Beekenberg overlooks the Caracas Bay on the south coast of Curaçao. The stone structure was built in 1703 to protect the entrance to the Spaanse Water, a natural harbor. The fortress was armed with eight-pounder and twelve-pounder cannons in the 1800s and served as a military outpost until the mid 19th century.

Saint Fernando Fortress is located in the town of Omoa on the Caribbean Sea coast. The colonial-era Spanish fortress was built of brick, rocks and coral and has been in use since 1775, and is currently a tourist destination.

Smederevo Fortress is located on the right bank of Danube, in the modern city of Smederevo in central Serbia. The medieval fortress has a triangular outline and is encircled by 1.5 kilometers of stone walls with 25 towers. The stamp shows a view of the fortified manor at the northern end of the fortress.

Stari Grad is a fortress near the city of Užice in central Serbia. The 13th century stone structure is located on top of a steep rocky hill above the Detinja river gorge. The fortress remained in use until mid-19th century.

Al Rustaq Fort is located in the ancient capital of Oman, 170 km away from Muscat. The massive outer walls date from the 18th century while the inner keep is of much earlier vintage. The interior of the fort features hidden passages, vertical stairways and massive ramparts.
