Something to keep in mind through all of this is that the USPS is a government agency created by Congress to achieve various public purposes. Products and services that they offer are defined by Federal law. What they can and cannot involve themselves in and what innovations and new services they pursue take, quite literally, an act of Congress.

The platform. Just what Amazon & ebay &&& provide: a one-stop, integrated solution.

For each package on the new not-just-stamps-dot-com, you'll get price & delivery options from all three carriers, and you'll click on the one you want, and you'll get a shipping label, a pickup scheduled, and consolidated shipping cost reports.

That might be worth more than the right to print stamps.

... that platform is already in place on etsy, spotfy, ebay , bonanza, overstocked, wazala, 1and1, ipage, paypal , and any well designed website. I don't see anything new stamps.com can bring ...

G-d Bless Etsy, but all of eCommerce amounts to 10% of US retail, and less than 2% of US GDP.

Stamps.com will be offering their integrated multi-carrier shipping solution to the other 98% of US GDP.

Plenty of money to be made out there, and well worth dropping their role as the world's coolest front-end for first class letter mail.

Cheers,

This piece echoes rodgcam's point that the USPS does not get to pivot at will.

But the headline is:

Stamps.com threw USPS under the bus ... because it's betting big on Amazon shipping

I do not know what this means.

Q/ Is CNBC saying that Amazon is going to pick-up shipments that do not originate from Amazon warehouses?

That is not easy to square with the thought that Amazon is going into the shipping business to better control their own costs.

Q/ Anybody?
