A one lot intact Worldwide Collection sold at auction yesterday for $80,000 with commissions of $16,000 for a buyer total cost of $96,000.
There are positive and negative things to learn about a collection this large and for those who are working to achieve a similar goal of building a Worldwide collection.
First the biggest positive ---That people are still willing to buy a massive collection .
As a Worldwide collector and one who spends a lot of my time each week working on that same goal, this was of special interest to me .
There are a lot of lessons to learn from this one sale .

First lesson ---To quote the auction firm and what they see often --"where five countries are strong and the rest is largely empty " This would be a big mistake because the auction house would take those "better " countries and list those separately and the rest would be sold as remainers . If a collector calls it a worldwide collection they need to balance out the whole collection . |

That collection realized what it did because it was absolutely packed with popular premium items in great condition. Canada complete MNH Jubilee set (and a used set as well), France Souvenir sheets valued up to $1100 each, a strip of five GB 1, Australia Sidney Harbour Bridge set including the five shilling in MNH condition and so many more. The individual items could have been a very nice auction unto themselves. As Ken stated in another thread the overall coverage was so-so when you went beyond the better single items. It was not 800,000 dollars of cv from dense coverage of common stamps nor was the cv a false perception because of condition issues. There is no way around the fact that the owner put a whole lot of money into acquiring items one at a time. Kelleher's statement that they could have broken it up is true and it probably should have been. The owner probably wanted a quick sale and walked in the door with it late. They should have waited for the October sale and had it properly lotted but they likely needed the funds much sooner. |

Even more likely was that the owner has passed on and the family wanted the money quickly. |

ROGDCAM---You bring up a very valid point and the stamp auction firm addresses part of your statement ,the firm posted that this collection could of been broken down in 80 lots by the auction firm .
As a Worldwide collector what you don't wish to happen is the "better" parts of your collection is sold and have the auction firm return some of it after the auction as unsold ,speaking for myself and maybe a few other life long collectors it is a ALL OR NOTHING when selling our main collection ,that is why it sold intact . |

REVCOLLECTOR ---That goes the same for the family ,the auction house had to tell the family ,if your wanting better money on the better stuff beware the firm could be returning sections of the collection after the sale. |

Is there supposed to be a link posted on here to an article or better, to the auction house's listing of this lot? I'm not seeing one. |

I second Stamps1962.
No need for secrecy about the lot (its already sold), and in the absence of a description/link how can anyone have any idea what people are talking about? |

Why the heck does the Stamp Auction firm tells you it is a Worldwide Collection and then needs to list and tell you what countries are in the world ? |

The lot describer should of told more about value that is in the lot , the only remark about a certificate is about a damaged set . Tell us how many Cert's tell us about how many $100.00 and up stamps or sets ,I want to know how many $1,000 stamps or are there questionable stamps in the owners estimate .....owners do nasty stuff like that . |

$600,000 of catalogue value for $96,000 doesnt sound like a very good deal to me.
Especially if 5 Penny Blacks are meant to be a selling point!!! (PBs are £400 cv in Gibbons, but you can get 3-margin ones for £30 or so without much trouble). " ...Great Britain (including #1 (5!) ..." |

Rogdcam:Am I missing something here? I read the lot description as saying there are 5 Penny Blacks, not a strip of 5. I would assume the 5 PBs are not top-of-the range, 4-margin types. A strip of 5 is quite a different matter. "Canada complete MNH Jubilee set (and a used set as well), France Souvenir sheets valued up to $1100 each, a strip of five GB 1, Australia Sidney Harbour Bridge set including the five shilling in MNH condition and so many more." |

Steevh - The description is seriously lacking. I viewed the lot in person. It is loaded with great items. The penny blacks are a strip of five but the GB is a weak part of the collection. There are tons of items that catalog in the $400 to $1000 plus range and the condition is very nice. You would have needed to see it. Again, the describer did not do it justice at all IMO. |
