revenuecollector, "to insure or not to insure" was rogdcam's question, hence knowledge of value of the items is essential in answering this. What's ethically wrong with asking how much a person's collection is worth in order to give an opinion about insurance?

It's a potential invitation to theft, hence the reticence.

rogdcam, a guesstimate would be between 50k to 100k. There is still a ton of stamps I have yet to sort out.

GeoffHa, I think Donald Sundman and Bill Gross would have tons of more valuable stuff than my place for thieves to set their eyes on. Moreover, their addresses are much easier to find than mine :)

Many thanks to Chris for sharing his measures regarding documenting his collection. It give me a kick in the pants and I am now documenting and organizing everything on spreadsheets, with photos of stamps, scans of certs, catalog values and invoice copies. Good stuff. It also has served to paint a much clearer picture for me of where I am with my collection. Great for insurance purposes and great for collecting. Saving all on my laptop, on a thumb drive, on the cloud and on paper.

I don't have the problem of documenting and inventory because I maintain a separate file of all the invoices from the various stamp auction houses .

I never sat down and looked at that file because I would be depressed at the amount of money I spend over the years .
