Another option is to buy a few economy tongs at five bucks each and if they take a pair so be it.

Fascinating thread. It never would have occurred to me that the TSA might confiscate stamp tongs. Floortrader's story was absolutely painful to read.

Stick them in your shaving kit bag with the toothpaste etc. To them it would be just another pair of tweezers, just don't try and stick them in your pocket.

Just an update. I did put the tongs in my carryon and I made it through security on both legs of the trip with no problem. In DC they gave the bag a longer than usual scan in a new type machine but in Omaha, maybe having seen so many stamp collectors and dealers, there was no trouble at all.

Out of curiosity, were those of you who had tongs confiscated flying TSA pre-check? I've been amazed at how utterly easy check-in has been since getting it... I've never had a bag inspected, but previously, I was always getting pulled aside for some reason or another.
