Here's an update since floortrader asked. 1) Kelleher packed everything up into shipping boxes and loaded up the U-Haul I rented. That was very nicely handled and easy. 2) I had the job of carrying the boxes - many marked "caution heavy" from the truck, up the stairs to the rooms we work in. There were two lots of 15 boxes, one of two boxes and my little one box of US. 33 boxes in all. No gym for me that day.
They are piled in two groups - as many as I could fit into a closet we emptied out and the rest in one of the kid's bedrooms who lives on his own these days.
It looks like the way we'll be working on them is one at a time rather than trying to open every box and organize. I'd like that, but most of this is for my wife and she likes the slow steady route.
The first box happened to have a bunch of US stuff - mostly subscription-based first day covers and the like. Those will find their way onto
ebay - not too valuable but actually quite attractive and cool. It's too bad FDC collecting has faded - these are some pretty nice things like a book of about 80 covers on large size pages in a Reader's Digest binder with each cover described with history and background and pictures. Quite amazing for stuff that sells so cheaply these days.
I have also offered to put some international stuff on
ebay as she comes across stuff that is duplicate but should sell for over $10 (my guideline since I ship everything with tracking).
So it's going to be a long story. It will certainly provide us with entertainment for years to come.
Now about my US inventory - the painful truth is I will be out of a supply of new stuff in a couple months. So I'm still trolling for collection sales for US. I did win one album, quite nicely filled - all used - so that extends me a bit, but for now I mostly look at these boxes with a bit of jealousy. Maybe I need to take up another country besides the US to join in the fun.
