Are There Any Stamps With Rock Chairs Or Roly Poly Toys?

As 22crows indicates, the search feature in the Stamp Community Forum is quite helpful. There's a lot of knowledge here and many topic have already been discussed and illustrated.

You will want to make up your own rules or limitations as to what will qualify as a rocking toy/horse/elephant, etc. On the toys page linked above, there is a rocking horse from Guernsey which actually goes back and forth, and does not have the rotational aspect which I gather is what interests you. Similarly, if there was a stamp featuring a Victorian platform rocker, that is a back and forth motion, and not a rotational rocking chair of the classic sort.

You will have fun with this topic I think. Especially having already turned up a rocking elephant....

Hi,Jonathan, thanks for the tips and suggestions! Looks like I cannot search for a while and I'd better take my time and browse through all the topics.

I now starts to love rocking things. I even take out an old ornamental toy from is box and begin to play with it. Actually it was a gift to my mom from her students, which had been neglected by me for many years and just laid at the conner of the bookshelf unwrapped. I am now really enjoy watching it rock. Rocking cats, really lovely isn't it?



The rocking horses are obviously pretty commonly seen on stamps as well as in daily life. What is interesting me now is that why there are not other rocking animals, such as elephant? If I were manufacturer, I would try rocking tigers , lions, camels, bulls, deers, pandas or even mythical animal like dragons and phoenix. So I think perhaps horses have special implications in your cultures. Anyway, it's great to see the toys and games of children. It's kinda like bringing people back to childhood by browsing through the stamps and it's also interesting to see the similarities and differnces between cultures and regions, and I plan to post more stamps to that thread on Chinese toys.

The rocking chairs seems pretty seldom depicted on stamps, but I am still feeling enthusiastic to dig a little further into the topic, and have some interesting discoveiess around them, like JFK's rocker and Linchon's rocker.



This JFK's rocker, which is donated to the White House by JFK family, makes me come to understand what you mean when you say almost fall over on your mother-in-law 's chair. :-) But I suppose it must be a cherishable memory, and will surely become a nice story you can tell your children in the future.

And I even begin to probe into Rock'n'Roll music a little bit. But I just cannot understand why it is call that name. It seems to me that the word generally relates to slow and relaxed things, but the music seems just on the contrary. Anyway#65292;it's not urgent, I think I can take my time, just like sitting in a rock chair, and perhaps even better with a pipe like Mark Twain, and letting things get straight and clear with the time. I think this is the spirit of rocking chairs, isn't it?

By the way , the platform rocking chair has a very clever design with its own tracks installed, which surely prevents grooves in the floor boards and carpets. This feature is a lot alike Scherzer's bridge's tracks. I guess maybe Mr. Scherzer invents his efficient bridge when he was rocking on such a chair! :-)

Former President Kennedy is shown sitting in his rocking chair on a stamp from Yemen.
It exists in a imperforate variety which is Michel #385 and an overprinted perforate one. The imperforate appears to be common on ebay which is where I took this image following of the two on an album page someone (not me) is selling.

Hi,Jonathan, it's astonishing that President Kennedy really sits on his famous rocking chair on stamps! Actually I searched JFK stamps but did not find this one and I explained to myself that maybe because this is not a typical enough image for him, because the rocking chair is mainly for curing his back pains and compared to his many other deeds perhaps too trivial. Thanks a lot for this great addition!

Here is another stamp - actually two stamps - showing Kennedy in a rocking chair. Issued 1967 by Upper Yafa which I believe is the only year any stamps were issued by or on behalf of Upper Yafa before it started to transition into Yemen...
People have argued about the postal validity of these, which were apparently all printed by Format International Security Printers, based in the UK, and most never actually went to Upper Yafa.

Anyway, the two are identical in design, but exist in different denominations. Looks like they are Michel #45 and 47. I do not have a Scott catalogue handy.

Idebee, here are a few more rocking items -- cradles specifically.

first from Austria, part of an issue from 1994 is a cradle. Scott #1633


second from Canada, 1983, Scott #929.
This one exists in two, maybe three background colors. Pink as intended, which is quite common. But then there is a kind of neutral light brown which is an error or oddity given Scott #929i and which costs quite a bit more. Elsewhere in the Forum, someone reported a green background.


third, (and last for this post) from Ireland, issued 2019 is a very cool wicker cradle held by a museum in Ireland. Part of a series of Irish history in 100 objects. I really like this as a piece of rural cultural production, quite elegant in form but made with the simplest, least expensive local materials....

Hi, Jonathan, thanks a lot! I like the last one too. I used to have a neighbor big brother whose father is a carpenter, and he has really clever hands and good senses, and can make lots of handicrafts. I can still remember we sat under a willow tree in a summer's afternoon when most people are napping#12290; He just made a beautiful flower basket out of the wickers with bare hands, it is like a magic! And the wicker basket turned out to be very very durable and we had used it for many many years.

Hi, Jonathan, thanks for the additions. It's really thought-provoking to see all these rocking things together, which reminds me to see people's life as in a row.

First we are born and put into cradles, then grow up a little to get onto the horseback, and later on we have to fight to live and not fall down as a roly-ploy toy , and at last when we get old we have to go into a rocking chair. We are rocking all the way, it's quite amazing coincidence, isn't it?

Ran across five more cradles for you:

First is from Monaco, 1971. it is a reproduction of a painting by Morisot entitled "Le Berceau" which translates to "The Cradle." While the title is on the stamp, so I would call it a cradle stamp, it unfortunately does not show the rocker curves at the floor.


Next is a set of no less than four stamps showing cradles from Yugoslavia. 1984.

Hi, Jonathan, even without the rocker curves, it's great to watch an impressionist painting and get to know its author. Actually I have received recently a postcard with a work by Renoir . It's also mother and kid. Watching and comparing them is quite fun, and glad to see a cradle on stamp as well as on a famous painting. Thanks! Maybe someday we can find a rocking chair on a famous painting too! :-)
