Centenary of the International Meteorological Organization - 1973 Designer: Ky Phungchaleun, Engravers: Claude Jumelet (90K) and Didier Guedron (150K) The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is the specialized agency for the UN for meteorology, operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences. This set was issued to commemorate the centenary of IMO. The stamps show Lao mythical characters symbolize meteorological aspects. Nang Mekhala, goddess of the sea, flies over the stormy sea and save sailors from sunken ships with her magic emerald ring. According to a Lao legend, Ramasoun, the sea storm demon, combats her for ever and try to steal her magic ring. On the bottom: The Vientiane meteorological service center.  Chariot of the Sun, mural wood engraving of Wattay airport, Vientiane – God of the Sun fights against god Asoun in the space. The chariot is driven by Phoenix, aviation symbol, guided by Prince Matouli.

 Lao Hmong woman in Puppy field in Tran Ninh, Golden Triangle, North Laos. The Puppy plants are used to produce opium drugs, one of the major criminal problems in Laos and in the neighboring countries that the Interpol tries to fight and prevent. Lao Mythology - 1974 Designer: Ky Phungchaleun, Engraver: Jacky Larrivière (110K)*** These stamps show sculptures of Lao mythology characters, exhibited in Theudea Park near Vientiane: Phra Sratsvady (Sarasweti) – The goddess of great wisdom, regarded as Phra Phrom's wife. She has four arms symbolizing mind, intellect, alertness and ego. With her four hands she is holding musical instrument, palms leaves manuscript, Rose flower symbolizing spiritualism and pot of sacred water.  Phra Indra – god of storm and wars. One of the powerful gods of the Mythical gods pantheon. He carries weapons, which he uses to slay his enemies and revive those who were killed in battle. He usually rides on Erawan, the three-headed elephant which became the emblem of the Kingdom of Laos.  Phra Phrom (Brahma) – One of world creators and god of mercy. He has four faces to help people from any direction. He holds symbolic instruments: disc as weapon against evil, scepter as protection of laws, water pot for creation of life, spoon as sacrificial tool, book as getting wisdom and arc as weapon against demons. He rides on Phoenix.

Wild Flowers - 1974 Designers: Ky Phungchaleun (30, 80, 500K), Phanorath (50K.) - Blue pea vine (Clitoria ternatea)**, Engraver: Jacky Larrivière - Water Lily (Nymphaea lotus), Engraver: Claude Jumelet - Cotton Tree (Bombax ceiba), Engraver: Guedron - Common Swamp Pitcher (Nepenthes phillamphora), Engraver: Guedron **The flower on the 30K stamp is described by mistake as Eranthemum nervosum although the Clitoria ternatea is depicted.

Birth Centenary of Guglielmo Marconi - 1974 Designer: Ky Phungchaleun, Engravers: Claude Jumelet (60, 90K) and Guedron (200K) Guglielmo Marconi (1874 – 1937), an Italian electrical engineer, inventor, and politician known for his creation of a practical radio wave-based wireless telegraph system. Laotians listening to radio broadcast using transistor 
 Modern and traditional means of wireless transmission. The inscription "Royaume du Laos" both in French and Laotian, is written as electric dots transmission.

Hey, LaoPhil, great thread! I wanted to give you some information on your post of 11/28/2024, the endangered wild animals series of 1971. The Lesser Malay Chevrotain was engraved by Pierre Gandon (from Ky Phung Chaleun's design, as you noted). Gandon's name is on there but doesn't show up very well on the finished stamp... there are artist's die proofs that he signed, however. |

Thank you very much, Nils, for your precious information. Indeed, the engraver name is not on the stamp but I glad to learn Pierre Gandon engraved it. I will update my virtual Laos stamp catalogue. Regards |

Thanks again, Nils, for sharing the great die proofs. Die proofs are the best items proving the engraver name when its name is not on the stamp. BTW, if you go back to previous pages of this thread, you will find several die proofs I posted (but not Gandon  ) |
